Message from the President

THE VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY

by David Harrell, PE
President, ACEC of Tennessee
On July 1, I officially began my term as your President. As I think about the task ahead I am both humbled and awed by the responsibility. I want to thank Steven Field for his leadership this past year. During his term, we were able to see modest growth in the number of member firms and employees. We continued to monitor legislation, and we were able to defeat several bills that would have adversely impacted our profession. We met our national PAC goal, and we began to implement an infrastructure initiative that will make ACEC of Tennessee more relevant to our members.

This past April, our incoming board members and committee chairs met to chart the course for next year. We decided to mesh our goals with national’s goals for the coming year, which can be summarized as “making ACEC of Tennessee recognized by all engineering companies and stakeholders as the voice of the industry.” This will not happen without active participation of our membership which begins with me and your ACEC of Tennessee board.

To be recognized as the voice of our industry, we must be proactive in developing programs and initiatives that will promote and protect our industry and address the issues we face. This is why it was so important that we began implementation of our “Infrastructure Initiative.” This coming year we will actively promote the need for infrastructure improvements of all kinds, starting with transportation. It is our goal to help the average citizen understand the importance of infrastructure funding.

We must remain vigilant by monitoring our surroundings and being ready to act when issues arise that can impact our industry. I have tasked each committee chair to meet with committee members to develop “action items” that can be accomplished this year. As we work together to help ACEC of Tennessee meet its goals, we will make the organization more relevant to our member firms. I know that we all have extremely busy schedules with the jobs we are paid to do, but with everyone pitching in and doing their part, we can establish ACEC of Tennessee as the “go to” organization for engineering firms and stakeholders all across this state.
